How Solar Desalination Could Solve Water Scarcity

An issue that keeps growing globally is water scarcity. It is mainly in places like the United Arab Emirates, where the options to get freshwater are extremely limited. To reach the water demand, the UAE has relied on desalination. This is a process that converts the seawater from the ocean into the water we drink everyday, but this needs a lot of energy, and can harm the environment. Recently in the UAE, they have tried out solar desalination. This is renewable because it uses the sun to power the process of desalination, so it is also more sustainable as well. In cities like Abu Dhabi, there are projects that look at how solar technology can make desalination more affordable, more efficient, and more environmentally friendly. This gives a much more promising solution to things in the future like water shortages. 

Masdar wrote an article about UAE solar desalination pilot projects. In this, the key points spoken about were about how Masdar tested multiple pilot plants using solar-powered reverse osmosis, achieving up to 75% reduction in the energy used compared to the other, older ways. It helped produce thousands of cubic meters of freshwater everyday, it focused on making desalination financially sustainable and profitable. This project also supported the UAE changing to using cleaner energy. Overall, this shows the real life solar desalination projects done in Abu Dhabi, and it proves that they work on a larger scale. 

MIT has a paper about how the solar powered desalination system requires no extra batteries. The article talks about the desalination that is created by MIT. The system produces around 5,000 liters of water per day, it maximises up to 94% of solar energy efficiency, is effective even with sunlight conditions fluctuating, and can provide more affordable water in distant locations. So it therefore informs the readers on how MIT designed a solar powered desalination system that is efficient enough to work without needing any batteries or energy storage. By using the direct sunlight when it is accessible, the system reduces cost and makes the process more convenient and practical to use, especially in the real world.

This only needs minimal external energy input, can be used in most places whether they are remote or developing, and it reduces the need to rely on such complex machines.

This clearly shows how strong the connection between the energy systems and the water actually is, by showing that processes such as desalination require large amounts of energy It highlights how switching to renewable energy can make desalination so much more sustainable and efficient for the future. The carried out researches and projects prove the possibility of developing this technology so that it would become efficient, eco-friendly, and economically beneficial. Considering all the works carried out both on Abu Dhabi project and MIT researches, one may note that this technology definitely possesses great perspectives. Though there will still be some obstacles to overcome, including higher start-up expenditures and improved efficiency, the solar desalination proves to have great perspective.
