The Science of Procrastination
Almost everyone procrastinates at some point, and research suggests that approximately 80–90% of college students procrastinate regularly (American Psychological Association). Procrastination is often dismissed as laziness, poor time management, or a lack of self-discipline. While these factors can contribute to delaying tasks, procrastination is more complex than simply choosing not to work. According to Moran, a psychologist who specializes in helping entrepreneurs and professionals, “Put simply, we procrastinate because of how we feel—i.e., anxious, bored, or frustrated.” Although all forms of procrastination involve delaying a task, individuals may procrastinate for very different psychological reasons. The six types of procrastinators can therefore be understood as different responses to emotional discomfort, anxiety, and the brain’s reward system.

Dopamine and Reward Prediction
Procrastination is not simply a matter of willpower. It is often reinforced by the brain’s natural tendency to seek immediate rewards. Dopamine, a neurotransmitter involved in motivation, learning, and reward, plays an important role in how the brain evaluates pleasurable or rewarding experiences. Activities that provide immediate gratification, such as scrolling through social media, watching videos, or playing games, can therefore seem more appealing than tasks whose rewards are delayed.
This explains why avoiding an assignment can sometimes feel surprisingly satisfying. Have you ever noticed how cleaning your entire room suddenly sounds like a great idea—as long as it means you do not have to start your assignment? The room may genuinely need cleaning, but the immediate sense of accomplishment provides a quick reward while allowing you to avoid the discomfort associated with the more difficult task.
Ultimately, procrastination can reflect the brain’s tendency to prioritize smaller, immediate rewards over larger rewards that require patience. Completing an assignment may provide a greater benefit in the future, but checking a phone or watching a video provides a reward immediately. When the brain is focused on the present moment, the immediate option can become much more difficult to resist.
Prefrontal Cortex vs. Limbic System
Another important factor in procrastination is the interaction between different systems in the brain. Located directly behind the forehead, the prefrontal cortex plays an important role in planning, decision-making, impulse control, and goal-directed behavior. It helps people “manage thinking, emotions, and behavior by using executive functions” (Cleveland Clinic). In simple terms, the prefrontal cortex is the part of the brain responsible for thinking ahead, staying focused, and making decisions based on long-term goals. It is the voice reminding you that, perhaps, you should start your assignment.
The limbic system, by contrast, is strongly associated with emotions, motivation, and behavioral responses. It processes information, responds to emotionally significant situations, and contributes to the way people react to stress and perceived threats (Cleveland Clinic). When a task feels stressful, boring, overwhelming, or unpleasant, the emotional response generated by these systems can compete with the logical planning of the prefrontal cortex.
So, what happens when the brain perceives an assignment as a threat?
The emotional response can become stronger than the brain’s long-term planning process. Instead of focusing on the consequences of not completing the assignment, the brain seeks an immediate way to reduce discomfort. This may lead someone to check their phone, watch YouTube, organize their room, or find almost anything else to do except the task itself. In these moments, avoidance provides temporary emotional relief, even though it may create greater stress later.
In other words, procrastination can become a cycle: a task creates discomfort, avoidance provides temporary relief, and that relief reinforces the habit of avoiding similar tasks in the future. When the emotional brain outweighs the planning brain, people may respond to this discomfort in different ways. These different responses help explain why procrastination does not look the same for everyone.
