Early statisticians, such as Bill James, disputed subjective assumptions in those times with data in the 1980s. James developed a mathematical system to assess baseball players called sabermetrics, which he published in a book named ‘The Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract’. In this work, he formulated equations like “runs created” that considered a baseball team’s offensive statistics to forecast how many runs they would probably score. It represented his initial attempt at a method to objectively evaluate players and assist general managers in optimizing their teams, as noted by the Society for American Baseball Research.
Sports analytics didn’t genuinely gain momentum until 2002, when Oakland Athletics general Billy Beane utilized it to assemble a team of less renowned players that almost secured a World Series title.
